Google Keep

Yesterday I was searching for an alternative for Evernote, I’ve never used evernote but I was looking for something simple and possibly free. So I came across Google Keep, simple sticky note style note taking, to do list keeping app.

I’ve never heard about Google keep before, so I did some searching and found out that it was here for exactly one year now. Although I was surprised that no one has mentioned using it.

It’s pretty basic, simple but user friendly (which something I like about Google), free and does the job for me, plus I don’t need any extra signups.

The notes are arranged as sticky notes, you can change the color and add an image if you want for the notes. The notes can be simple text, or a to do list. I wanted something to remember things to do, save link to read later and a to do list. So keep fit my plan pretty well.

I’ve never seen anyone talking about Google keep...

Twitter turns 8 years.

BjQpKDLCcAAJnmR.jpg

Yes some of you guys favorite social network Twitter is now 8 years old. Who would have thought something started so simple would be something this big.

Although twitter has been here for 8 years it is still something new to most sri lankans. Even I joined twitter 5 years back (that account is not there anymore) and even then there were very few sri lankans. Since then Twitter has grown to something that’s like a small sub culture in Sri Lanka, with yearly gatherings of sri lankan twitter users.

Twitter back then has been something completely different to twitter that we see today. It was SMS based, no timelines, no way to follow people and all the tweets by everyone appeared as a single stream of tweets (posts) and no @replies.

It was not even called Twitter back then, it was called Twttr.

Most people who love Twitter today wouldn’t have joined back then, and the original idea...

MH370 can’t go under a shadow of another Boeing 777.

12 days and counting there is no sign of MH370, and there are so many theories floating online. I’ve 2 past posts about some of the theories I read and I think was rational.

One of the stories that I read was MH370 flying under she shadow (below or above) of another Boeing 777 flight. Although this sounded more like a story out of the movies it was still a good theory. So tweeted this story to my twitter friend @kbuwa who’s an engineer at Mattala international airport.

According to him and one of the engineers @senerath007 who is an expert at radar says that it’s not possible for this to happen.

I’m still trying to get more information info from these guys why this is not possible (I’ll update this post when...

So where is MH370?

It has been 10 days since the flight MH370 has gone missing and it has been one of the most interesting event that I’ve seen in my time and has enough events and entertainment to make a movie out of it. This has being one of those rare stories that made me follow this story almost reading every article with new information.

Today I got the chance to read 3 very interesting theories regarding the MH370 flight. Plus there are some grave security issues that hopefully might get fixed in the future to avoid such things.

  1. One is that the flight flew 1500 meters to avoid being detected by radar.
  2. The flight traveled under a shadow of another Boeing 777.
  3. There might have been a fire at the cabin that caused the plane to crash.

The first one is that the flight traveled at 1500m to avoid being detected by radar, travelling at low altitudes is used mostly by fighter pilots which will help them...

Should prices change depending on user location?

So I was reading this thread on Hacker News about the popcorn project, which the discussion was mostly about kickstarter backed projects and piracy. I was having this idea about this post on piracy for some time so I thought it’s the high time to post this. Although the basic idea of this post can be used for any service/software that’s out there for a price.

Well Sri Lanka can very well be one of the countries with highest rate of pirated content. Almost all the Windows PCs in the country run a pirated copy of Windows, movies, songs everything is pirated from the web copied and burnt on thousands of CDs and sold at a fraction of the original price. The piracy is so high in the country some local artists have stopped releasing albums and are making a living by releasing singles and doing concerts.

The reason for piracy is not that people want it for free (well some people might want...

MH370 The flight that never reached the destination.

So the MH370 flight has been missing for nearly a week. As the time goes by without the plane not being found there is fewer chance of finding the plane or the people in it in one piece. Which I hope will not be the case here.

The story gets mysterious day by day, yesterday’s news of the planes engine working for nearly 5 hours after the transponder stopped working means it rules out the possibility of a sudden loss of the flight like an explosion or disintegration in mid air.

I’m not an aviation expert but I was wondering what if the stopping of the transponder might be the first sign of a mechanical failure? Was there a chain reaction of events made the plane lose it’s control or killed or made the pilots unconscious and flew for 4 hours and finally crashed in an uncertain area?

Although the last communication from the plane was that everything was ok, was the turning back of the...

Trying my thing with Svblte.

Hello world. How can we change the kudos image like I see in some svblte blogs?

Looking at the editor it’s you’ll have to know your way through markdown, the dashboard is complected no hints or help for someone who just singed up like me.

Well also the editor is not as cool as medium, there is something called ideas at the dashboard. Kinda like mini posts, or place to save ideas for later writing.

So it seems I’m one of the lucky ones to sign up for svbtle when it became public accidentally. (So they say).

Interestingly the dating of the posts are not dependent on your location. I posted this post on 14th January around 11 AM at my local time, however the post says it’s being published on 13th January. (I think it’s 13th Jan back at SF by then).

Here’s an interesting comment on Hacker News about Svbtle and Medium, couldn’t agree with it more, I never received any invitation from...
