Double standard media

In the recent times regarding the Aluthgama and Beruwala is settling down with time. However I think people should question the standards of media that was displayed during the incidents.

For example one thing that was very evident, that was the blackout in the mainstream media, which I think was a good thing that stopped the violence from spreading to other parts of the country. Although the blackout might have made false rumours spreading in social media and on the community, but things would have been much worse if teal situation was telecasted on mainstream media.

Other thing that was evident was how some media that is being backed by foreign organizations wanted to add fuel to the ongoing conflict.

Slingshot, Facebook’s new mobile messenger

Facebook has been trying to tap into the messaging world for the past 1-2 years, the main reason behind being more people being attracted to communicate via messaging apps like Snapchat, WhatsApp and Viber rather than Facebook, this is especially popular amongst the teenagers and young crowd which seek for more quicker and easier way of messaging.

Facebook is worried that this rise of the messaging cult will threaten Facebook with more teenagers leaving Facebook these days for messaging apps than joining them. Facebook tried to polish it’s messenger app but it never got the popularity amongst the the young crowd. The simplicity of messaging apps which only needs seconds to join and will only need a phone number to register than filling some robust information on Facebook.

Facebook try to buy all the competitors that they thought will one day threaten their domination, they bought...

Racist attacks hit Beruwala

People were experiencing some quiet period in racist attacks by BBS and other organizations until today where clashes have been going on in Beruwala and Aluthgama regions.

Meanwhile in quite a few Sunday newspapers there were news about Muslim extremists coming up in parts of Sri Lanka connected to Al-Qaeda.

There are extremists in both sides, both are not good. However unlike in other Muslim countries, Buddhists have been extremely kind to all religions in the country. And it’s a fact that both Buddhists and Muslims have been treated unequally from time to time by the opposite parties.

Another growing problem is the decreasing Sinhalese population which is most of the time true, even I meet someone from a Sinhalese family with large number of siblings (most of them have 2-3 siblings in a family, 5 max. 6-7 very rare).

However SM was the first place for people to join the bandwagon...

Don’t expect others to behave online

I get requests from my friends, specially from female friends to report certain accounts online. Most of them are about fake accounts that resemble them. Recently I got a similar request from a friend. However this one was somewhat different.

The request was to report a fake account that’s using pictures of a friend of mine and posting very abusive stuff. However unlike other occasions this friend has been posting selfies and other pictures of her publicly on social networks like Instagram and Twitter.

I asked “why should I report this account, if you post photos publicly, you should remember the consequences” . Her response was “that doesn’t justify other people using them”.

The thing is we can’t expect others to behave themselves and obey the laws all the time. Internet is just like the society, it’s not a fair place. There are trolls and sociopaths and sometimes people have...

People who knows everything

I get the chance to work with different people everyday, college, outside college, friends, strangers. Everyone is different in their own ways, some have good qualities than bad some have more bad qualities than good.

However there are some people whom I really find it hard to work with, they are the people that act as if they knows everything. I don’t know the reason for their behaviour but I’m sure you must have met at least one person like that in your life. Personally for me they are the worst kind of people that I like to work with, unfortunately I’ve to work with few of them everyday.

This has fascinated for me sometime, how do some people act behave like they know everything? Is it something that comes from their childhood? The grooming by their parents had to do some part of it? or they just got so successful in life that made them believe that everything they touch is turning...

People mind your own business, PDA is not a crime

Today I read a post by @Shailendree “PDA needs to stop”, that goes to day PDA is a bad thing and it must be stopped. I’ve read a similar post sometime back and I was wanted to write a post back then but now that there are two posts I’ll write my thoughts today.

PDA is (if you don’t know) public display of affection, and like most I get to see them everyday, at college, while travelling in public transportation and in cinemas and other public places. And once when I was doing AL, I’ve seen some old guy blaming an innocent couple for showing PDA at a bus.

I’m a person who is not against PDA, yes I repeat I’m not against PDA and I don’t find any wrong in PDA or the people who are doing it, and it doesn’t make me feel uncomfortable.

Sri Lankan people just love to know what other people are doing even though they themselves are not doing great. We poke at our neighbours, our friends, and...

Social media coming under watch in Sri Lanka

The political arena is more in a transitional period in the country, the government is with the declining popularity, people within the government is talking against the government ( whether it’s real or not), government wondering to have a presidential or parliamentary election first, basically people are wondering how long the government and the president is going to keep up their popularity.

Making things worst for regular internet users, government is going to watch people’s online social media activity with the help of the country that is having the world’s worst censorship China.

SM

According to the Ceylon today news the government is worried about people talking against the govenrment on Social Media leading to change in the government.

With the spread of cyber crime causing unrest in countries, Sri Lanka wishes to take precautions against such acts.

This means the usage of...

The world youth and Sri Lankan youth

Recently Sri lanka hosted the 2014 World Youth Conference. Many people I know on Twitter was involved in it and I don’t say that a bad thing. I didn’t see much of the happenings other than what people posted on Twitter.

However from the beginning I was very skeptical whether all these things will actually change the way the country is heading. But then I saw that there were people with more negative ideas towards it than me, who believed that it was a complete waste.

SL youth

I just don’t feel that the youth conference will do any good to the country and the direction it is heading, or do any good to the costs of living, inequality of status and wealth, and law.

I don’t blame for the youth, plus I don’t think the president should get all the blame. I think it’s the system of the country that has been there for so long. Everyone wants to change the political system of the country but no one...

The four SWs of success

This is from a radio show I overheard last night. The host was talking about the four SWs of success, which I think is a good concept for everyone. Here basically like the title say there are four SWs of success, let me explain.

1 - SW - Some will

The first SW is some will. Some will agree with you in life, some will buy your product, some will respect you, some will love you, some will be there for you in tough times. Basically there will be some in life that will agree with you.

2 - SW - Some won’t

As there will be some people who is there for you, there will be definitely some people who won’t be there. Some won’t like you, some won’t respect you, some won’t buy your idea or product, and definitely there will be some who will not love you.

3 - SW - So what

Although there are some people who doesn’t like you or love you, so what? Why care about the people who doesn’t like you...

Is Google+ dead yet?

I’ve been seeing lot of posts about Google+ might be killed by Google sometime in the future. With the product head of Google+ [Vic Gundotra is leaving Google](recode.net/2014/04/24/exclusive-google-head-vic-gundotra-leaving-company/). Now questions are being asked is Google going to kill Google+.

Google plus was pretty good back in the day with some good added functions that Facebook lacked, where Facebook copied some of them later. However G+ never got enough frustrated Facebook users to get going and it was slowly adding users just because they had to make a Google+ profile when they make a gmail account.

I remember being really excited when G+ came along, that it will be great and will beat or be a better service than Facebook which I was frustrated with privacy and bad UI experiences. I had to wait for few weeks when a friend sent me an invitation to join G+ back in the day.

This...
